This Coastal Marine Protected Area, gazette by Presidential Order in March 2014, was formally proposed to the government by Melimoyu Foundation five years ago, but our studies and especially the lengthy work with the local inhabitants at Raul Marin Balmaceda started in 2004. The Pitipalena Marine Coastal Protected Area, (50,000 acres), covers the area from Punta Guala to Sea Lion´s Islands. At the center, there is Raúl Marín Balmaceda, a small coastal town located at the mouth of the Palena River, with a population of 400 inhabitants, who make their living by fishing and the harvest of shellfish. A Management Council for the Protected Area was established and Carlos Cuevas, the president of Melimoyu Foundation was elected by all the local organizations to chair the Council. The local people are very keen to keep control of their Areas for the Management of Benthic Resources and there is a great interest and expectations of development centered on whale watching. In this area it is possible to see blue whales, killer whales and a number of dolphin species, even from the beach, and the community is very aware that this is an opportunity to be seized.
