Barbuda Blue Halo is a comprehensive, science-based, community-driven initiative to create policy and management for sustainable, profitable, and enjoyable use of coastal waters around Barbuda. This will include comprehensive zoning, new fisheries management regulations, plans for monitoring, enforcement, and financing.
The Waitt Institute’s primary role is to collaborate with governments and facilitate planning between the local communities that want to overhaul their management of ocean resources. The Waitt Institute provides the technical tools and resources to the local government and people of Barbuda in order to make well-informed decisions and design an effective and locally appropriate management system.
On 12 August 2014, the Barbuda Council signed into law a sweeping set of new ocean management regulations that zone their coastal waters, strengthen fisheries management, and establish a network of marine sanctuaries.
